Binh Dan Hospital Partners with European Experts to Standardize Urological Cancer Diagnostics

Must read

Amid a global and domestic rise in urological cancers, Ho Chi Minh City’s Binh Dan Hospital has collaborated with the European Association of Urology (EAU) and the Vietnam Urology and Nephrology Association (VUNA) to host a training workshop on June 20, 2026. The event gathered over 200 medical experts nationwide to update and standardize pathology practices according to international benchmarks, aiming to enhance treatment efficacy through precision diagnostics.

According to the World Health Organization’s GLOBOCAN 2022 data, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney cancer are currently among the most common cancers globally. In Vietnam, over 10,000 new cases of these three types of cancer are recorded annually. Given this reality, pathology is considered the “gold standard” to precisely determine tumor characteristics, evaluate malignancy grades, determine disease staging, and guide personalized treatment strategies for each patient.

As a leading specialized urological surgical center in the country, Binh Dan Hospital receives over 30,000 specialized urological outpatient visits annually and performs nearly 5,000 surgeries. In 2025 alone, the hospital’s pathology system processed more than 25,690 pathological specimens, including 6,220 samples related to malignant urological tumors. This provides a vital foundation for the specialist team to continuously enhance histopathological diagnostic capabilities, evaluate prognosis, and build customized treatment plans tailored to individual patients.

This year’s workshop featured the participation of many prestigious experts from Europe and the region, including Professor Bernard Malavaud from France, Professor Maurizio Colecchia from Italy, alongside Associate Professor Ferry Safriadi and Associate Professor Lukman Hakim from Indonesia. The practical insights shared from these leading urological centers offered up-to-date perspectives on modern diagnostic standards and emerging trends in the specialty.

In addition to updating the latest pathological classifications for prostate, bladder, and renal cell carcinomas, the program introduced prominent advancements in molecular biology, personalized medicine, standardized pathology reporting, as well as the application of digital pathology and artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnostics. These core topics are expected to foster consistency in clinical practice while significantly improving the quality of patient care and treatment outcomes.

Through close cooperation with prestigious global professional organizations, Binh Dan Hospital continues to affirm its strategic orientation toward international standards, constantly updating the new milestones of precision medicine and expanding its professional network. This is also a significant step forward in bringing advanced standards of modern pathology closer to Vietnamese patients, contributing to higher treatment efficacy and superior healthcare quality in the future.
